Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga takes leadership position in sustainable practices
Riga, August 2023 – In an important milestone, Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga has achieved Silver Certificate through EarthCheck, the world’s leading business advisory group specialising in sustainability and destination management for the travel and tourism industry.
To avoid catastrophic climate change, the world needs to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees centigrade above pre-industrial levels. Today, we are already at 1.1 °C and feeling the effects, meaning that the window for achieving our target and avoiding the most catastrophic impacts of climate change is rapidly closing. The very environmental values and cultural assets that attract visitors to destinations need to be protected and responsibly managed. The tourism industry and its operators are key to creating this change.
Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck, said that Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga has taken a significant leadership position in sustainability.
Mr. Moore said, “I would like to congratulate whole team at Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga on their achievement. Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga is a valued member of a global group of tourism operators who dare to make a difference.”
This noteworthy accomplishment follows twelve months of dedicated and collaborative efforts by the Green Team, a specialised group dedicated to promoting sustainability throughout hotel operations.
The hotel’s EarthCheck Silver Certification highlights its strong commitment to sustainable practices in various key areas, such as sustainable development policies, resource management, waste disposal, and community engagement. This recognition positions the hotel as a leader in the industry’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability, addressing important issues like rising global temperatures.
“We are delighted to receive this certificate, in particular as Latvia, being ranked under the top 20 greenest country in the world. As a team we continuously look at opportunities to drive sustainability to protect our beautiful earth for endless generations to come” said Carmen Mauthner, General Manager of Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga.
By working with EarthCheck, Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga has joined other industry leaders who are taking meaningful steps towards resolving some of the very real issues that face the planet.
